The article analyzes the concepts of «homophobia» and «homonegativism» in psychiatry and psychology; causes of homonegativism; psychological characteristics of persons prone to homonegativism. Levels of homonegativism in female and male high school students were studied.
The relationship between homonegativism and aggression, as well as the value orientations of young men and women, is analyzed. It was found that the majority (66%) of respondents in the sample feel positive or neutral emotions towards homosexuals. Statistical analysis of the data showed that there are no gender differences in the levels of homonegativism in high school students.
Respondents (66%) have an average level of aggression. There is a moderate direct relationship between homonegativism and aggression in males. There is no relationship between these indicators in females. It has been established that the leading values of adolescence are such values as independence, hedonism, kindness and stimulation. Respondents of greater value recognize the need for autonomy and independence, seek pleasure or sensual satisfaction. For them, it is important to be friendly in interaction with loved ones and peers, the desire for novelty and deep feelings. No significant gender differences in value orientations were found in high school students. The boys found a moderate direct relationship between the level of homonegativism and indicators of such values as conformity and power; and inversely related to indicators of such value as independence. In girls, a moderate inverse relationship of homonegativism with such indicators of values as hedonism, universalism was found; and a direct link to indicators of such value as tradition. The article presents the results of approbation of socio-psychological training aimed at reducing the level of homonegativism and the development of tolerance in adolescence.
