NATIONAL IDENTITY OF UKRAINIAN UNIVERSITY YOUTH IN THE TIME OF WAR

Abstract

The positivity and clarity of the national identity of Ukrainian students in domestic higher education institutions is an important basis for the stability of our nation. The purpose of the article is to experimentally investigate the national identity of Ukrainian students of domestic higher education institutions in wartime, compared to pre-war times. The experimental study used a modified method of assessing the positivity and uncertainty of ethnic identity. It has been experimentally determined that in the pre-war and war times the largest number of Ukrainian students of domestic higher education institutions has a high level of positivity of national identity, much less – medium and the lowest – low. Differences in quantitative data at all levels are statistically significant, which indicates a significant increase in the positivity of national identity of the subjects in wartime. Students with high and medium levels present national dignity and self-esteem in many situations of interethnic interaction. They are proud of their national and cultural origins and belonging to the Ukrainian nation. Students with low level do not have a strong commitment to their nation. Once again, they do not mention their nationality and national and cultural origins.

It was also found that in the pre-war and war time the largest number of Ukrainian students of domestic higher education institutions is characterized by a high level of clarity of national identity, much less – medium and the lowest – low. Differences between quantitative data at all levels are statistically insignificant, which indicates the absence of significant changes in the clarity of national identity studied in wartime. Students with high and medium levels fully or partially agree that they are aware of their own national origin and determine their nationality in interethnic interactions. They know quite a lot about the Ukrainian nation and its features, about the national character. Students with low level are not always aware of their own national origin and determine their nationality in interethnic interactions. They know little about their nation and its characteristics, as well as their national character.
